Royals Complete Comeback Win Over Railers in Shootout, 4-3

Reading, PA - The Reading Royals (11-17-4-0), proud ECHL affiliate of the Philadelphia Flyers and Lehigh Valley Phantoms, defeated the Worcester Railers (12-17-1-3) in a shootout, 4-3, at the DCU Center on Friday, January 3rd. Goaltender Vinnie Purpura (5-2-0) earned the win in goal with 29 saves on 32 shots faced in regulation and three saves in the shootout. Worcester’s goaltender Michael Bullion (5-10-0-2) suffered the shootout loss in goal with 24 saves on 27 shots faced in regulation and one goal allowed on three shots faced in the shootout.

BOX SCORE

Worcester scored three goals in the opening period, including the first goal of the game 45 seconds into play on a tap-in by Justin Gill (2). Lou-Felix Denis (5) tied the score for Reading at 2:18 before the Railers tallied a pair of goals at 11:59 by Anthony Callin (7) and 19:49 by Matt DeMelis (1), 3-1.

Jake Smith (6) and Matt Brown (6) tied the game, 3-3, with goals at 9:40 and 19:39 into the second period, respectively. Brown’s goal was his second of the season on the power play and earned both himself and Smith a multi-point game (1g-1a). Sam Sedley recorded a multi-point game with his second assist of the game on Smith’s goal.

Purpura and Bullion turned aside a combined 20 shots faced in the third period and overtime to send the game to a shootout. Matt Miller scored the lone shootout goal on Bullion while Purpura stopped all three Worcester shootout attempts to backstop Reading’s first post-regulation win of the season (1-4).

Reading concludes their two-game road series against the Railers on Saturday, January 4th at 6:05 PM.

The Royals return home to host the Trois-Rivières Lions for a three-game series on Friday, January 10th and Saturday, January 11th at 7 PM, as well as Sunday, January 12th at 3 PM. The home games feature the 'Fans Pick the Music Night,' Star Wars Night, and Puck N' Pancakes promotional games, respectively.
