Petruzzelli Drops Gloves in Goalie Fight, Royals Rolled by Thunder, 4-1

Reading, PA - The Reading Royals (8-15-4-0), proud ECHL affiliate of the Philadelphia Flyers and Lehigh Valley Phantoms, fell to the Adirondack Thunder (11-10-0-1), 4-1, at Santander Arena on Saturday, December 14th. Goaltender Keith Petruzzelli (4-8-3-0) suffered the loss in goal for Reading with 10 saves on 12 shots faced through 20 minutes of play.

Petruzzelli lended Reading’s net to Vinnie Purpura, who stopped 21 of 23 shots faced through 40 minutes, after he fought Thunder goaltender David Fessenden at center ice at the end of the first period. Fessenden earned the win in goal with 23 saves on 24 shots faced. 

BOX SCORE

Adirondack scored a pair of goals in the first and second period to take a commanding four-goal lead into the third period, 4-0. Patrick Polino opened the scoring at 9:21 with his third goal of the season. Tag Bertuzzi extended Adirondack’s lead to 3-0 with goals at 15:25 of the first period and 1:11 of the second.

Zach Bannister snapped a wrist shot past Purpura at 2:29 of the middle frame while Reading was held scoreless on 14 shots on goal through two periods.

Todd Skirving put Reading on the board at 14:40 of the third period with his seventh goal of the season, which ties the Captain for the team lead in goals this season.

The Royals conclude their two-game series with the Thunder at Cool Insuring Arena on Saturday, December 21st at 7 PM.

The Royals return home to open a two-game series with the Worcester Railers at home on Friday, December 27th at 7 PM at Santander Arena, before taking on the Railers at the DCU Center on Saturday, December 28th at 6:05 PM.
