The Reading Royals (4-4-0), proud ECHL affiliate of the Philadelphia Flyers and Lehigh Valley Phantoms, dropped their third consecutive game on their road trip to the Maine Mariners (2-4-0), 3-0, on Saturday, November 2nd at Cross Insurance Arena. Goaltender Keith Petruzzelli (2-1-0) suffered the loss in goal for Reading with 29 saves on 32 shots faced. Mariners’ goaltender Nolan Maier (1-2-0) earned his first win in goal as a Mariners and third professional career shutout with 14 saves.
Maine notched a goal in each period of play and broke the ice 1:50 into play on a goal from former Royals’ defenseman, Mason Millman. During a 4-on-4 following offsetting roughing penalties to Nick Capone and Michael Underwood, Millman gloved down a puck in the slot and beat Petruzzelli for his second goal of the season. Jacob Hudson and Zachary Massicotte earned the helpers on Millman’s goal that held as a Maine 1-0 lead after the first period.
The Mariners extended their lead to two goals on an Owen Pederson power play goal at 18:22 into the second period. Pederson deflected a shot from Millman past Petruzzelli for his first goal of the season. The goal gave Millman a multi-point game (1g-1a) and Maine up after 40 minutes, 2-0.
At 11:24 into the third period, Justin Bean finished off a tic-tac-toe connection with Nick Jermain and Bennett Stockdale for his first goal of the season and give Maine a 3-0 lead. Maier turned aside all three shots faced in the third period by Reading’s offense to earn the shutout against his former club of the last two seasons. Reading was outshot 32 to 14 in the game and went 0/2 on the power play while the penalty kill killed 5/6 Maine power plays.
Reading’s road trip concludes on Sunday, November 3rd at 3:00 PM against the Maine Mariners at Cross Insurance Arena. The Royals return home on Wednesday, November 6th to host the Norfolk Admirals at 7:00 PM at Santander Arena for a WIld Wednesday promotional game.
