Royals Agree to Terms with Defenseman Ryan Segalla

Reading, PA – The Reading Royals of the ECHL, affiliate of the Philadelphia Flyers of the National Hockey League, today announced that the team has agreed to terms with defenseman Ryan Segalla. He becomes the fourteenth player announced as signed by the Royals to a standard player’s contract for the 2017-18 season.

In addition to Segalla, Reading has also announced the signings of Chase Golighty (d), Michael Huntebrinker (f), Nick Luukko (d), Mark Naclerio (f), Ryan Penny (f), Sam Posa (d), Emil Romig (f), Matt Salhany (f), Adam Schmidt (f), Scott Tanski (f), K.J. Tiefenwerth (f), Derek Whitmore (f), and Matt Wilkins (f).

Segalla (6’1 / 202) (22), who hails from Boston, Massachusetts, will be entering his second season of professional play. In his rookie season, he registered eleven points (3g-8a) in sixty-two games with the Wheeling Nailers of the ECHL. Segalla was also fourth on the Nailers with sixty-five penalty minutes, which included three fighting majors—two of which came against the Royals, including a memorable tilt with Tyrell Goulbourne at Santander Arena on November 30, 2016. Interestingly perhaps, Segalla’s other fight came against Nolan Zajac, who was then playing for the Toledo Walleye and who has been signed by the Royals’ American Hockey League affiliate (Lehigh Valley Phantoms) this season. Segalla, who was a fourth round pick of the Pittsburgh Penguins in 2013, also earned a one-game call-up to the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins late last season, racking up four penalty minutes in a 4-0 win for the Penguins over Lehigh Valley on March 25, 2017. Prior to turning pro, Segalla played three seasons at the University of Connecticut where he registered a total of twenty-one points (3g-18a) and 125 penalty minutes in eighty-six college games.
