Royals Agree to Terms with Emil Romig

Reading, PA – The Reading Royals of the ECHL, affiliate of the Philadelphia Flyers of the National Hockey League, today announced that the team has agreed to terms with forward Emil Romig. He becomes the eighth player announced as signed by the Royals to a standard player’s contract for the 2017-18 season.

In addition to Romig, Reading has also announced the signings of Chase Golighty (d), Michael Huntebrinker (f), Nick Luukko (d), Ryan Penny (f), Matt Salhany (f), Adam Schmidt (f) and Matt Wilkins (f).

Romig (5’9/180)(24), who hails from Wien, Austria, will be entering his first season of professional play. Last year as a senior at the University of Denver, he registered a career high fifteen points (9g-6a) in thirty-six games with the Pioneers and helped lead them to their eighth NCAA Division I National Championship in program history.  Romig and his Denver teammates qualified for the NCAA Tournament all four years in which he was enrolled. He also was an Academic All Conference selection for the NCHC a total of three times.

Despite missing the first seven games of his freshman year due to an NCAA suspension for previously playing with a European pro in a junior league, Romig registered his first career goal and point in his seventh career collegiate game against the Air Force Academy. Romig would go on to finish tied for second on the Pioneers in game winning goals with three. In his sophomore season, Romig proved to be even more valuable to Denver, as the team compiled a record of 4-1-1 when he registered at least one point. In 135 career games with the Pioneers, Romig recorded forty-three points (23g-20a) and sixty-seven penalty minutes.

Prior to his collegiate career, Romig had a terrific stint in international play. In 2009, Romig and his Team Austria teammates claimed the bronze medal at the IIHF U-18 (Division 1-B) World Junior Championships. Two years later, Romig and his teammates would claim bronze again, this time in the U-20 (Division 1-B) WJC. In 2010, he won a Czech Junior League championship with HC Zlin, a team for which he scored 100 points (42g-58a) in 140 career starts. Romig made the jump to North America in 2011-12 with the Indiana Ice of the USHL. Romig tallied ten goals and eight assists in 57 games, and moved to the NAHL the next season, joining the Corpus Christi Ice Rays, where he would end up second on the team in scoring in 2012-13 with fifty-four points (17g-37a) in fifty-four games.
