Royals Sign Forward Ryan Penny

Reading, PA – The Reading Royals of the ECHL, affiliate of the Philadelphia Flyers of the National Hockey League, today announced that the team has agreed to terms with forward Ryan Penny.

The Royals have announced fourteen players as signed to ECHL Standard Players Contracts for the 2016-17 season. In addition to Penny, Reading has announced the signing of forwards Justin Crandall, Robbie Czarnik, Olivier Labelle, Mike Pelech, Mike Pereira, Joe Rehkamp, Ian Watters and Matt Wilkins and defensemen Miles Liberati, Nick Luukko, Derik Johnson, Todd Perry and Mike Marcou.

Penny (6’0/193) (21), who hails from Fall River, Nova Scotia, is entering his second season of pro. Last year, Penny, who signed an AHL contract with the Ottawa Senators of the NHL in July of 2015, started the season with the Evansville Icemen of the ECHL, where he registered a total of twenty-three points (10g-13a) in thirty-three games. Penny also earned a two-and-a-half month call-up to the Binghamton Senators of the AHL where he registered five points (2g-3a) in twenty-four games with the Senators before returning to Evansville to complete the season with the Icemen. His second AHL goal proved to be the game winner in a 6-3 win for Binghamton over the Utica Comets on January 8. Prior to turning pro, Penny played five years in the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League, where he scored thirty-two goals in sixty-six games with the Rouyn-Noranda Huskies in his final season of major junior. In 305 total games in the QMJHL, Penny, who served as the team captain in his last two seasons in the league, racked up 154 points (78g-76a) and 185 penalty minutes.

Season Sixteen of “Hometown Hockey” kicks off for the Royals on Saturday, October 15, (7:00 pm) when the Elmira Jackals visit Santander Arena.
