NHL Stanley Cup Playoff MVP Becomes Fourth Former Royal in the Past Six Seasons to Kiss the Cup

Reading, PA – The Reading Royals of the ECHL congratulate former Royal goaltender Jonathan Quick and his Los Angeles Kings teammates, who captured the National Hockey League Stanley Cup Championship over the New Jersey Devils with a 6-1 victory tonight in Game Six at Staples Center in Los Angeles, California. The Kings won the best-of-seven series four games to two. Quick is the fourth former Royal in the past six seasons to be a member of a Stanley Cup Championship team, joining George Parros (Anaheim Ducks, 2007), former Coach Derek Clancey (Pittsburgh Penguins, 2009), and Rich Peverley (Boston Bruins, 2011). Former Royal Scott Parse was also of the Kings this season, but sustained a season ending injury in November. Quick began his pro career in Reading and played thirty-eight games for the Royals in 2007-08, compiling a record of 23-11-3 with a 2.79 goals against average and a .905 save percentage. In his second game as a Royal, on October 24, 2007, in Pensacola, Florida, Quick not only made thirty-two saves to register his first pro shutout, but was also credited with scoring a goal in the Royals’ 3-0 win over the Pensacola Ice Pilots. After tonight’s game, Quick was awarded the Conn Smythe Trophy as the NHL Playoffs Most Valuable Player. He is the second consecutive former ECHL goaltender to win the Conn Smythe, joining the Boston Bruins’ Tim Thomas (who played for the Birmingham Bulls formerly of the ECHL in 1993-94) who received that award last season.
