Reading, PA - The Reading Royals (8-12-4-0), proud ECHL affiliate of the Philadelphia Flyers and Lehigh Valley Phantoms, defeated the Worcester Railers (9-13-1-1), 5-2 at DCU Center on Wednesday, December 11th. Goaltender Vinnie Purpura (2-2-0-0) earned the win in goal with 32 saves on 34 shots faced while Railers goaltender Michael Bullion (4-7-0-0) suffered the loss in goal with 28 saves on 33 shots faced.
Reading registered two goals in the opening eight minutes of play for a 2-0 lead after 20 minutes. Lou-Felix Denis deflected his third goal of the season past Bullion on a shot from the high slot by Cam Cook at 3:13 before Ryan Leibold scored his fourth goal of the season off of a rebound from Bullion’s pad save to a blue-line shot from Emile Chouinard at 7:52.
Shane Sellar extended Reading’s lead to three goals at 10:41 into the middle frame with a wrist shot over the left shoulder of Bullion for his second goal of the season. Cole Donhauser answered back for the Railers at 11:03 with a dangle around Purpura and tap in at the goal line for his second goal of the season.
Matt Brown restored Reading’s three-goal lead at 12:23 of the second period with his third goal of the season before Matt Miller improved the Royals advantage to four goals with a shorthanded goal at 1:05 into the third period. The goal was Miller’s third of the season and the fourth shorthanded goal tallied by Reading this season.
Griffin Luce scored a goal for Worcester that went under review and stood at 3:37 into a final frame where the Railers outshot the Royals 10-7. The Royals early advantage prevailed in their third-straight win over the Railers this season (3-0) and sixth-straight at the DCU Center.
The Royals return home for a two-game series against the Wheeling Nailers at Santander Arena on Friday, December 13th and Saturday, December 14th at 7:00 PM.
