Reading, PA - The Reading Royals (7-11-4-0), proud ECHL affiliate of the Philadelphia Flyers and Lehigh Valley Phantoms, fell to the Adirondack Thunder (10-8-0-1) in overtime, 3-2, at Santander Arena on Saturday, December 7th. Goaltender Keith Petruzzelli (4-4-3-0) suffered the loss in goal with 35 saves on 38 shots faced while Thunder goaltender David Fessenden (1-0-0-0) earned the win in his professional debut with 40 saves on 42 shots faced.
Adirondack scored the game’s opening goal 17:09 into the first period on a slapshot by Stephen Calisti past Petruzzelli’s blocker side. The goal was the first of Calisti’s professional career and put Adirondack up after 20 minutes, 1-0.
Mason Primeau scored his second goal of the season to ignite the Teddy Bear Toss at Santander Arena at 13:19 of the second period. Assisted by Logan Britt and Emile Chouinard, the goal was Primeau’s second in as many games and brought on an avalanche of teddy bears and stuffed animals, which will be donated to charity this holiday season, in the 12th edition of the Teddy Bear Toss game held in franchise history.
Both teams scored in the third period with Jake Smith potting a power play goal at 4:39 for his fourth goal of the season before Kevin O’Neil beat Petruzzelli to force overtime at 13:40 with his fifth goal of the season.
With six seconds remaining in the extra frame, Ryan Conroy snapped a wrist shot past Petruzzelli to net the game-winning goal. Reading outshot the Thunder 5-3 in overtime and 42-22 in the game.
The Royals open a three-game series against the Wheeling Nailers with a road contest on Sunday, December 8th at 4:10 PM at WesBanco Arena. The series shifts to Reading for two games at Santander Arena on Friday, December 13th and Saturday, December 14th at 7:00 PM.
