Leibold Scores Twice, Royals Drop Series Finale with Railers, 5-3

Reading, PA - The Reading Royals (10-16-4-0), proud ECHL affiliate of the Philadelphia Flyers and Lehigh Valley Phantoms, fell to the Worcester Railers (11-16-1-2), 5-3, at the DCU Center on Saturday, December 28th. Goaltender Keith Petruzzelli (4-9-3-0) suffered the loss in goal with 32 saves on 36 shots faced. Railers’ goaltender John Muse (5-3-1-1) earned the win with 34 saves on 37 shots faced.

BOX SCORE

Reading jumped out to a 2-0 lead at the end of the first period on goals from Matt Miller (4) at 16:07 and Ryan Leibold (5) at 19:10. Gianfranco Cassaro earned assists on both goals for his second professional career multi-point game while Reading matched their single-period season-high 21 shots in the opening frame.

Worcester responded with a pair of goals at 1:45 from Connor Welsh (4) and 7:21 from Mason Klee (3) to even the score, 2-2. Leibold (6) restored Reading’s lead with his second goal of the game and second multi-goal game of his professional career.

Anthony Repaci drew the game back to a one-goal score for Worcester with a power play goal 1:02 into the third period. The power play goal was the Railers Captain’s team-leading sixth on the man-advantage and 19th overall of the season.

Trailing 3-2 entering the third period, the Railers scored two goals in a span of 13 seconds to take the lead, 4-3. Anthony Callin (6) and Matthew Boudens (2) registered the goals before Jordan Kaplan (6) sealed the game with an empty net goal at 18:40.

The Royals conclude the 2024 calendar year with a New Year’s Eve puck drop against the Wheeling Nailers at WesBanco Arena on Tuesday, December 31st at 6:10 PM.

The Royals return home to host the Trois-Rivières Lions for a three-game series on Friday, January 10th and Saturday, January 11th at 7 PM, as well as Sunday, January 12th at 3 PM. The home games feature the 'Fans Pick the Music Night,' Star Wars Night, and Puck N' Pancakes promotional games, respectively.
