Royals Thump Thunder with Seven-Goal Outburst, 7-1

Reading, PA - The Reading Royals (6-8-2-0), proud ECHL affiliate of the Philadelphia Flyers and Lehigh Valley Phantoms, defeated the Adirondack Thunder (6-2-0-1), 7-1, at Cool Insuring Arena on Sunday, November 17th. The seven goals were the most goals the Royals have scored in a single game this season. Goaltender Vinnie Purpura (1-1-0) earned the win in goal with 23 saves on 24 shots faced. Thunder goaltender Jeremy Brodeur (4-1-0) suffered his first loss of the season in goal with 20 saves on 27 shots faced.

Both teams lit the lamp in the first period with Reading breaking the scoreboard at 3:25 on an unassisted breakaway goal by Matt Miller. Before the intermission, at 16:58 of the first period, Adirondack scored on a power play to even the score on Andre Ghantous’ second goal of the season.

Reading opened the second period with their own power play on Connor McMenamin’s team-leading sixth goal of the season at 3:02. The first of two power plays in the game for the Royals opened the scoring onslaught for Reading. Jake Smith at 13:31 and Gianfranco Cassaro at 16:16 extended Reading’s lead to three goals after a three-goal middle frame, 4-1.

The Royals tacked on three more goals in the final frame with Travis Broughman (3), Emile Chouinard (2) and Parker AuCoin (4) each netting goals on wrist shots over the glove of Brodeur. Miller led Reading’s offense with three points (1g-2a) to tie his single-game career high for points. Sam Sedley (2a), McMenamin (1g-1a) and Broughman (1g-1a) each registered multi-point games in the road victory for the Royals, as well.

The Royals conclude their five-game road stretch against the Norfolk Admirals on Wednesday, November 20th at 7:05 PM at the Norfolk Scope Arena.

The Royals return home on Friday, November 22nd to open a two-game home stint with the opener against the Norfolk Admirals at 7:00 PM at Santander Arena before the home stand finale against the Maine Mariners on Saturday, November 23rd at 7:00 PM at Santander Arena.
