Manchester, NH – The Reading Royals (loss, 6-8-0-1 = 13) of the ECHL, affiliate of the Philadelphia Flyers of the National Hockey League, were defeated by the Manchester Monarchs (win, 9-4-0-1 = 19), 2-1, at SNHU Arena in Manchester, New Hampshire.

The Royals struck first, but—as was the case last Saturday in Reading against the Monarchs—enjoyed the lead for only a short-time against the strike-back inclined Monarchs, who tied the game in less than three minutes, got what proved to be the game winner late in the second, and then held Reading’s offense at bay as the Royals sought to charge down the stretch. The loss, which extended the Royals’ losing streak to six, marked the fifth time this year that Reading has been held to just one goal—three of which have been against the Monarchs.

Reading got on the board first 6:58 into the second period, when Nick Luukko sprang Chris McCarthy with a long break-out pass out from the defensive zone. McCarthy carried down the right side and then dropped the puck to a trailing Olivier Labelle, who backed himself into a shooting position in the slot. Labelle’s bullet clanged off the right pipe, causing the puck to tumble into the body of goaltender Sam Brittain who had fallen to the ice and was unable to corral it before an alert McCarthy swiped it home from the blue paint.

2:46 after that, the Monarchs re-tied the game at one when Quentin Shore carried into the left circle. As he prepared to shoot, a Reading back-checker stick-checked him causing Shore to double-clutch on the puck; but that change of pace also blew up the Royals’ coverage around the net, and when Shore regained the sliding puck, he slipped it across the top of the crease to defenseman Justin Agosta who had jumped up for the easy weak-side tap in.

Manchester got what proved to be the game winner, 16:48 into the second when defenseman David Kolomatis drilled a low bullet from the right point that goaltender Mark Dekanich kicked out with the right pad. The puck fell to the left side of the crease, where a falling Danial Ciampini was somehow able to force the puck home for his sixth of the season.

Reading came with a heavy push in the third, outshooting Manchester 11-3, but couldn’t find the equalizer as the team dropped to 0-4-0-0 against the Monarchs this season.
