Royals Announce 2013-14 Regular Season Schedule

Reigning Champs Open Title Defense on Home Ice against South Carolina Stingrays on Saturday, October 19

Reading, PA – The 2013 ECHL Kelly Cup Champion Reading Royals, affiliate of the Washington Capitals of the National Hockey League and the Hershey Bears of the American Hockey League, today announced the team’s 2013-14 regular season schedule. The reigning champs will open the team’s thirteenth season in Reading at the Sovereign Center on Saturday, October 19 (7:35 pm), against the only organization to win three Kelly Cups in the history of the league, the South Carolina Stingrays. The 2013-14 regular season will conclude seventy-two games later on April 12, 2014, at Amway Center in Orlando, Florida, where the Royals will face the Solar Bears. The Royals 2013-14 regular season schedule is set out in full below and is available on the team’s website: www.royalshockey.com. This marks only the third time in team history that the Royals have opened the season on home ice and the second time the team has opened the season against the Stingrays. (Reading began the 2011-12 campaign with a 4-3 overtime loss in South Carolina). Please note that the starting time on opening night will be pushed to 7:35 pm to accommodate a pre-game ceremony honoring the Royals’ 2013 Kelly Cup Championship. The following day, Sunday, October 20 (4:05 pm), the Royals will also face the Stingrays, marking the first time in team history that Reading has started a season with back-to-back games at home against the same opponent. The opening weekend of hockey at the Sovereign Center is part of what are twenty-seven weekend home games for the Royals this season—eight on Fridays, twelve on Saturdays and seven on Sundays. Additionally, Reading will host a pair of holiday games, including a ‘Thanksgiving-Eve’ showdown with the Wheeling Nailers on Wednesday, November 20, and a Monday matinee (January 20 @ 1:05 pm) in the team’s annual Martin Luther King, Jr. Holiday matchup against the Elmira Jackals. All twelve Eastern Conference opponents will make an appearance at the Sovereign Center this season. Ironically, perhaps, the only building within the Conference that the Royals will not travel to this season is the North Charleston (SC) Coliseum—home ice for the Stingrays. The buildings that the Royals will visit most frequently this year are First Arena in Elmira, New York, and WesBanco Arena in Wheeling, West Virginia, each of which will host the Royals seven times. In fact, the road portion of the Royals’ schedule kicks off on Friday, October 25, in Elmira, where the team will face the Jackals for the first of what will be sixteen total times—the most against any one opponent this season. The Royals will face the team’s other Atlantic Division foe, the Wheeling Nailers, fifteen times this year. The other opponents that the Royals will see most frequently this season come from the North Division—the Kalamazoo Wings (eight), the Evansville Icemen (seven), and the Toledo Walleye (five). Reading will face-off against the Cincinnati Cyclones—the team’s opponent in the 2013 Eastern Conference Finals—four times, three of which will be played at U.S. Bank Arena in Cincinnati. The Royals longest home stand of the season lasts just four games in mid-January, concluding with the Martin Luther King, Jr. Holiday matinee. After that game, the Royals will embark on a season-long six game road trip through the North. All of these games come in the Royals’ busiest month of the season—January—when the team will play fourteen games. Reading plays six in October, eleven in November, ten in December, thirteen in both February and March, and concludes the regular season with six games in April. With the exception of opening night (which will start at 7:35 pm et), game times at the Sovereign Center this season remain the same: 7:05 pm Wednesday through Saturday and 4:05 pm on Sunday. However please note that on Sunday, November 10, and Sunday, January 12, the start time will be pushed to 5:05 pm in order to accommodate the travel schedule of the respective teams.
