Riley Gill Named Reebok Hockey ECHL Goaltender of the Week

Third Year Pro’s Performance Last Week Included Second Shutout in Five Games

Reading, PA – The Reading Royals of the ECHL, affiliate of the Washington Capitals of the National Hockey League and the Hershey Bears of the American Hockey League, today announced that goaltender Riley Gill has been named the Reebok Hockey ECHL Goaltender of the Week (03/11 – 03/17/13). Gill, a third year pro from Northfield, Minnesota, went 3-0-0-0 with a 1.00 goals against average and a .969 save percentage in three appearances for the Royals last week. Gill, who was signed by Reading on February 27, began last week by making twenty-seven stops in the Royals’ 7-1 win over the Wheeling Nailers at the Sovereign Center in Reading. He followed that up with his second shutout in a span of five games, when he rejected all thirty-four Elmira Jackals’ shots in the Royals 2-0 win on Friday. He then made twenty-seven saves in the team’s 3-2 win over the Cincinnati Cyclones on Saturday, as the Royals set a team record with the twenty-sixth win of the year at the Sovereign Center. Overall this season, Gill, who has held the opposition to one goal or less in five of the nine games that he’s played for the Royals this season, has compiled a 1.34 goals against average and a .950 save percentage. This is the first time that Gill has been selected as the ECHL’s Goaltender of the Week. He has twice been named the ECHL’s Goaltender of the Month (October 2010 for the Victoria Salmon Kings; and February 2012 for the Kalamazoo Wings). This marks the second time this season that a Reading goaltender has received the Goaltender of the Week Award. Philipp Grubauer also received the award for his performance during the week of November 12 -18, 2012. It is the fourteenth time a Royals’ goaltender has won the weekly award. Gill is the eleventh different Reading goaltender to receive this recognition, joining Barry Brust (three times), Matt Dalton, Scott Fankhouser, Yutaka Fukufuji, Philipp Grubauer, Peter Hamerlik, Adam Hauser, John Murray, Michael Ouzas, and Cody Rudkowsky (twice). The Royals kick off a four game road trip starting tomorrow (Wednesday, March 20 @ 7:30 pm) at the Allen County War Memorial Coliseum in Fort Wayne, Indiana, where Reading will face off against the Fort Wayne Komets. The Game Day Broadcast on Wednesday starts at 7:00 pm on CBS Sports Radio (1240 am and 98.5 fm) with the pre-game warm-up show brought to you by Steve Moyer Subaru. As with all Royals’ road games this season, Wednesday’s game will be televised locally in Berks County, Pennsylvania, courtesy of Boscov’s Travel and Apple Vacations.
