Washington Capitals Mascot—Get Ready, He’s Another ‘Slapshot’—Spirit Squad and Red Rockers to Visit Reading Next Week
Reading, PA – The Reading Royals of the ECHL and the Washington Capitals of the NHL today jointly announced that the Capitals’ mascot, who’s also known as Slapshot (not sure if there’s any relation…DNA testing to follow), and several of the Washington Capitals Red Rockers and Spirit Squad are going to visit Reading on Tuesday, November 13, and Wednesday, November 14, for a couple of days packed full of activities that will include appearing at the Royals game against the Elmira Jackals at the Sovereign Center on Wednesday night (7:05 pm). The Capitals Slapshot, Spirit Squad and the Royals Slapshot (rumors are that they’ve hit it off famously….) will join up with the Washington Capitals Red Rockers and kick off their daily activities by appearing at—and donating street hockey equipment to—Reading-area schools. On Wednesday afternoon, after their school appearances, the crew will also seek to bring a bit of levity and joy to the Reading Hospital. That night, the ‘Slapshot Twins’, Red Rockers and Spirit Squad will be front-and-center during all phases of the Royals pre-game and intermission activities, which will include a concerted effort to whip the Royals’ faithful into a frenzy with an intermission t-shirt toss. The Royals take this opportunity to thank the Capitals organization, their Slapshot (and our Slapshot, too), Spirit Squad and the Red Rockers for coming to Reading and helping us celebrate our ‘New Beginning’ and brand new affiliation with the Red, White and Blue in our Nation’s Capital. We look forward to a couple of days of fun. The Royals take on the Trenton Titans for two in a row at Sovereign Center in Reading tonight (Saturday @ 7:05 pm) and Sunday (4:05 pm). As part of the ’Veterans Day Weekend’ Activities, the Royals will recognize all full and partial Royals Season Ticket Holders who have served (or are currently serving) as a member of our country’s military. The full and partial STH veteran recognition will be part of a weekend filled with activities supporting US military veterans, which will include the Royals wearing special red, white and blue flag-inspired jerseys in both games this weekend. Those special jerseys will be auctioned after Sunday’s game with the net proceeds from the auction going to benefit local veterans groups, as well as two local veterans who recently sustained war-related injuries. The Royals will also host a clothing drive to assist local veterans at both games this weekend. Fans are encouraged to deliver lightly used clothing to the US Army Transport Vehicle that will be located outside the Sovereign Center on Saturday and Sunday. Also, Home Depot, in conjunction with ‘Veterans Making a Difference,’ will make pledges that will serve to assist local veterans with critical home repairs. Fans in attendance will also receive a great giveaway for their support this weekend. On Saturday, the first 2,000 fans 15 years of age and older will receive a Royals camouflage jersey; while on Sunday, the first 1,000 fans 14 and younger will receive a youth version of the camouflage jersey—all courtesy of V&M Towing. Tonight’s game night radio broadcast will kick off at 6:35 pm on ESPN Radio 1240 am and 98.5 fm.
