Royals Announce 2012-13 Regular Season Schedule

Reading’s Twelfth Season Begins Where Last Year Ended: First Arena in Elmira on Friday, October 12

Reading, PA – The Reading Royals of the ECHL today announced the team’s 2012-13 regular season schedule. For the tenth time in the twelve year history of the team, the Royals’ 72-game regular season schedule opens on the road—this year, the game action kicks off in the same building where last season ended: First Arena in Elmira, New York, where the Royals will take on the Elmira Jackals, on Friday, October 12, 2012. Seventy-two games later, Reading will close out the 2012-13 regular season against those same Jackals at the Sovereign Center on Saturday, March 30, 2013. The home season for the Royals starts on a Saturday night, as well—Saturday, October 13, 2012, when the Royals will take on the team’s closest geographic rival and most frequent opponent—the Trenton Titans—for the 133rd time in team history. The Royals will face each of the thirteen opposing teams in the Eastern Conference this season, including the three most recent additions to the East (the Evansville Icemen, the Fort Wayne Komets, and the Orlando Solar Bears), each of whom will make an appearance at the Sovereign Center in 2012-13. Reading fans will also get a look at the reigning Western Conference Champion Las Vegas Wranglers, who visit the Sovereign Center for a pair of games in late January. The bulk of the Royals schedule pits the team against divisional foes, playing a total of forty-three games against teams from the Atlantic Division with the Jackals leading the way (16), followed by the Titans (15) and the Wheeling Nailers (12). Outside the Atlantic, the Royals’ most frequent opponents this season will be the Toledo Walleye and the newcomer Solar Bears, each of whom Reading plays four times. The Royals play three games against the Cincinnati Cyclones, the Evansville Icemen, and the Kalamazoo Wings, while Reading has a pair against the reigning Kelly Cup Champion Florida Everblades, the Fort Wayne Komets, the Greenville Road Warriors, the Gwinnett Gladiators and the South Carolina Stingrays. As noted, all thirteen Eastern Conference opponents—and one from the Western Conference—will make an appearance at the Sovereign Center this season. Evansville makes their inaugural appearance at the Sovereign Center on Saturday, November 24; while Reading fans will get their first look at Fort Wayne and Orlando on back-to-back nights with the Komets visiting the Sovereign Center on Friday, December 14, and the Solar Bears coming to town on Saturday, December 15. The longest home stand of the season for the Royals will extend for six games starting on Friday, January 18, against the Cincinnati Cyclones and continuing through Wednesday, January 30, against the Wheeling Nailers. Within that time span, the Royals will host the team’s annual Martin Luther King, Jr. Holiday matinee game on Monday, January 21, when Royals take on the Jackals at 1:05 pm. With the exception of The Arena at Gwinnett Center, the Royals will play in all of the other barns in the Eastern Conference this year. Reading makes the team’s first appearance ever in Evansville, Indiana, on Sunday, November 18; the Royals have back-to-back games in Orlando on February 28 and March 2; and the team makes their first trip to historic Allen County War Memorial Arena in Fort Wayne, Indiana, on Wednesday, March 20. The Royals longest road trip of the year comes hot on the heels of the team’s longest home stand, as Reading plays five straight on the road in early February—a trip which includes one of three appearances this season at the Huntington Center in Toledo, Ohio. The Royals play fourteen games in the month of February—nine on the road—which ties with November as the busiest month of the season for Reading. Fifty-two of the Royals seventy-two regular season games this year fall on weekend dates, including twenty-two on Saturday—thirteen of which are to be played on home ice. In fact, twenty-six of the team’s thirty-six home games this year are on a Friday, Saturday or Sunday. Game times for 2012-13 at the Sovereign Center will remain consistent with last season—7:05 pm for Wednesday through Saturday and 4:05 pm for Sunday.
