Royals Agree to Terms with Forward Adam Schmidt

Reading, PA – The Reading Royals of the ECHL, affiliate of the Philadelphia Flyers of the National Hockey League, today announced that the team has agreed to terms with forward Adam Schmidt. The Royals have announced seven players as signed to ECHL Standard Players Contracts for the 2017-18 season. In addition to Schmidt, Reading has also announced the signing of Chase Golightly (d), Michael Huntebrinker (f), Nick Luukko (d), Ryan Penny (f), Matt Salhany (f) and Matt Wilkins (f).

Schmidt (6’2/201) (26), who hails from Warrington, Pennsylvania, will be entering his fourth season of professional play. Last year, he registered twenty points (12g-8a) and thirty-three penalty minutes in forty-nine games with Tingsryds AIF in the second division of Swedish pro, the HockeyAllsvenskan league. That was Schmidt’s third consecutive season in Sweden. In his first two years in the league, he led his team—Vita Hasten HC—in goals scored, racking up fifteen in fifty games in his rookie season and nineteen in fifty-two games in 2015-16. In 151 total regular season games in Sweden, Schmidt notched eighty-two points (46g-36a) and seventy-five penalty minutes.

Prior to turning pro, Schmidt had a stellar four year collegiate career at Holy Cross College. After finishing fifth in scoring in his freshman year, Schmidt lit things up in his sophomore year, racking up a team leading eighteen goals and thirty-seven points, which earned him the team’s Most Valuable Player honors and a selection to the All Atlantic Hockey Second Team. Schmidt, who served as the Crusaders’ Alternate Captain in his senior season, ended his collegiate career with fifty-two goals—seventh most in school history—in 151 games, which is tied sixth most in school history.

After completing his senior season at Holy Cross, Schmidt jumped to the American Hockey League where he closed out the 2013-14 season by playing fourteen games with the Worcester Sharks, where he scored his first pro goal and picked up a pair of assists. Prior to matriculating to Holy Cross, Schmidt played two seasons with the Sioux City Musketeers of the United States Hockey League, where he went after winning a Pennsylvania State High School Hockey Championship at LaSalle College High School in Wyndmoor, PA.
